Vassal Keep is a secluded hamlet nestled in the shadow of the Empire, largely forgotten by the outside world. With a population nearing 100, it is home to both Humans and Aasimar, who live in relative harmony despite the constant threat from a nearby dragon and its kobold cult followers. The Humans of Vassal Keep are known for their vibrant, unnatural hair colours, a mystery that has spawned countless myths and legends. The hamlet is led by a council headed by Lord Protector Deckard Kassian and his wife, Lady Elora Amethyst-Kassian, along with other key figures who work tirelessly to ensure the survival of their people.
Vassal Keep is situated in a remote and rugged region, surrounded by dense forests and rocky hills. The hamlet is relatively isolated, with only one rough road leading in and out, though few dare to travel it due to the danger posed by the kobolds and the dragon. The surrounding landscape is dotted with dilapidated and burned-down homes and buildings, ancient ruins and overgrown paths, destroyed by the siege and the onslaught of the kobolds, remnants of a time long past.

Vassal Keep was founded during the late 3rd Age by a group of settlers seeking refuge from the wars and turmoil that plagued the land. The hamlet was named for its location near an ancient keep, now in ruins, which once served as a vassal stronghold.

After Tiamat was unleashed early in the 4th Age, a powerful emerald dragon named Thalorax claimed a nearby grove as its lair. The dragon's presence attracted a cult of kobolds who worship Thalorax as a divine being. Since then, the hamlet has been under constant threat, with the dragon's minions frequently attacking in search of tribute or sacrifices.

One of the most devastating attacks occurred in the 34th year of the 4th Age, when a large force of kobolds, led by Thalorax's dragonspawn, laid siege to the hamlet. The Vassal Guards, with the help of the Aasimar families, managed to repel the attack, but the losses were heavy. This event marked the beginning of the hamlet's isolation, as the roads leading to Vassal Keep became too dangerous to travel.
The people of Vassal Keep live a simple, yet difficult life. The vibrant hair colours of the Human families are a source of both pride and mystery. Some say that the colours are a gift from the gods, a sign of favour or a mark of destiny. Others whisper that the colours are a curse, a result of some ancient pact or forgotten sin. The Aasimar families, with their celestial heritage, are seen as protectors and guides, their platinum, silver, and golden hair adding to their otherworldly presence.
Despite the hardships, the people of Vassal Keep are resilient and resourceful. The hamlet has a strong sense of community, with everyone contributing to the well-being of the whole. The Vassal Guards, though few in number, are brave and vigilant, defending the hamlet from the constant threat of kobold raids.
Current StrugglesVassal Keep continues to struggle with maintaining its population, as many of its defenders and elders have been lost in the ongoing conflict with the kobolds and Thalorax. The hamlet's future is uncertain, but the people remain steadfast, drawing strength from their community and their faith.
Much of the city's historical records were lost during the Siege of Vassal Keep when the library was burned down. The school now also serves as the city's library.
The economy of Vassal Keep is modest, with most families engaged in farming, crafting, and trade within the hamlet. Key locations include:
- Vassal Inn: A gathering place for the community, offering food, drink, and a few rooms for those who need shelter.
- Whittman Farms: The primary source of food for the hamlet, providing grains, vegetables, and livestock.
- Laforge and Steele: A small forge run by the Laforge family, producing tools, weapons, and armour for the Vassal Guards.
- Vassal Library and School (Kassian Archives): A combined library and school where the hamlet's children are educated and the community's knowledge is preserved.
- Apothecary: A small shop offering medicinal herbs, potions, and remedies.
- The Meat Shop: Provides fresh meat and cured products from local game and livestock.
- The Bakery: Famed for its simple but hearty bread, baked fresh daily.
- Chapel of the Celestial Light: The spiritual heart of the hamlet, where Priestess Gwen Seraph leads prayers and ceremonies.
Vassal Keep is governed by a council led by Lord Protector Deckard Kassian and his wife, Lady Elora Amethyst-Kassian. The council includes:
- Chancellor Roderick Peregrin (Half-Elf): A wise and diplomatic figure who manages the hamlet's internal affairs and mediates disputes.
- Marshal Ricken Sorval (Human): The head of the Vassal Guards, responsible for the defence of the hamlet and its people.
- Priestess Gwen Seraph (Human): A spiritual leader who oversees the Chapel and provides guidance and comfort to the community.
- Treasurer Garvin Dragonhoard (Dwarf): Manages the hamlet's limited resources and ensures that supplies are distributed fairly.
The council meets regularly at Kassian Hall, a modest stone building that serves as the seat of governance and a place of refuge during attacks.
The Captain of the Guard is Vandall Astraeus (Aasimar), with his wife Éowen Astraeus (Aasimar) serving as his Lieutenant.
The origin of the Humans' vibrant hair colours is shrouded in mystery. Some believe that the colours are a sign of divine favour, a gift from the gods to mark the people of Vassal Keep as special or chosen. Others claim that the colours are the result of an ancient curse, a punishment for a forgotten transgression or a pact made with otherworldly beings. The Aasimar families, with their celestial bloodlines, are often seen as the key to understanding this mystery, though even they do not know the truth.
